(2016) The digital transformation of the public sphere, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan.
Fan Mai sheds light on media practices by a specific group of international migrants, English-speaking Western expatriates living in China. The difference-in-power relationship between nations defines the identity of "expatriate" in the first place. Fan Mai identifies three strategies expatriates use to deal with the gap between the Chinese media environment and the media environment they were familiar with: using proxy services to circumvent the Great Firewall, adopting Chinese media platforms as substitutes and creating their own media outlets.
