Sonifikation (engl. sonification) bezeichnet die Darstellung von Daten und Signalen in Form von Klangereignissen, um Informationen über das Gehör zu gewinnen oder zu vermitteln. Selten wird der Begriff auch als Synonym für die gängigeren Begriffe der ›Sonikation‹ oder ›Ultrasonikation‹ verwendet, mit denen in der Chemie und Biologie verbreitete Verfahren der Ultraschallbehandlung zur Stimulierung von chemischen Prozessen bezeichnet werden. Eine frühe und noch heute gebräuchliche Definition bestimmt Sonifikation als »the use of nonspeech audio to convey information. More specifically, sonification is the transformation of data relations into perceived relations in an acoustic signal for the purposes of facilitating communication or interpretation« (Kramer et al. 1999, 3).
