Im Jahr 1998 publizierte der neuseeländische Musiklehrer, Chorleiter und Komponist Christopher Small (1927–2011) ein schmales Buch mit dem Titel Musi­cking: The Meanings of Performing and Listening. ›Musicking‹ war ein von Small erfundenes Kunstwort, geprägt in Anlehnung an die ältere englische Form musick und abgeleitet aus dem (fiktiven) Verb to music. Denn das Buch wendet sich explizit und grundsätzlich gegen den Sprachgebrauch, ›Musik‹ als ein Substantiv, also als eine Art Sache oder Ding, zu verstehen: »There is no such thing as music. Music is not a thing at all but an activity, something that people do. The apparent thing ›music‹ is a figment, an abstraction of the action, whose reality vanishes as soon as we examine it at all closely« (1998, 2). Nicht die platonisierende Abstraktion ›Musik‹, sondern die Aktivität des ›Musicking‹ sollte also unseren Sprachgebrauch und damit unser Denken prägen.
