Charles Burton Martin, affectionately known to his friends and colleagues as "Charlie", was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He graduated B.A. with distinction in Philosophy at Boston University, from whence he proceeded to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, as a Ph.D. student, and also attended lectures at Oxford. In 1954 he came to my department at the University of Adelaide as Lecturer, and was quickly promoted Senior Lecturer and later Reader. From 1966–1971 he was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney, and from 1971 has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary. He has held visiting professorships at Harvard four times, at Columbia twice and the Universities of Michigan and Rochester once each.
