The first task in seeking to understand Heidegger's work is, as Poeggeler has reminded us, "... first to hear the one question meditated on by Heidegger."1 This question is the question of being (die Seinsfrage). I shall here attempt an exposition of this question as construed by Heidegger at and around the time of the publication of Sein und Zeit.
