(1980) Wilhelm Dilthey, Dordrecht, Springer.
The goal of this chapter is threefold: first, to examine Dilthey's social background and the ideological aspects of his work; second, to describe the combined challenge that positivism and historicism posed to his thought and; third, to analyze Dilthey's first response to this double challenge. I will begin the chapter with examining his environment. This will provide us with a background for the interpretation of his work.
