Zeynep Üsüdür / All the effort to go abroad …

Billede zeynepThe life of a Ph.D. student (and academic workers in general) is not only about reading, writing and talking philosophy. There are other obligations as well – for example to go abroad to internationalize, to establish new contacts and get to know new and relevant research environments. For a couple months I have been in the process of planning a stay at UC, Berkeley in the fall semester 2016, which I am looking very much forward to. But I have been surprised about the amount of time it takes to plan and realize such a stay. I looked though my mailbox to have an overview of how many mails and persons have been involved in this. I stopped counting my mails, when I reached one hundred and something. Around 20 people from UC, Berkeley, University of Copenhagen and the Denmark-America Foundation (I have not counted all the external private people I have contacted to find a place to stay) have been very kind and helpful with achieving grants, VISA, insurance, flight tickets, housing options, documentation of many kinds for the achievement of much of the above, and so on. Therefore I have spent days and days writing applications, sending mails, talking on the phone, copying and scanning documents, filling in forms, etc. (and I still have more to do). While spending time on all of this a bad conscience has constantly lured in the back of my head. Because, I am also supposed to spend time on my Ph.D. project – which is the most important thing after all! I have talked with Ph.D. students who complained that there is a pressure that we ought to go abroad. For if there are not someone obvious reasons for a visit somewhere in the world, what would be the point of going abroad merely to sit and write in a strange library room. But if one does have the possibility to visit practically any university one would like to (and there are people who are willing to help with the administrative and financial aspects of it), I definitely do think it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. And it is a sad thought to think that no one or no academic environment anywhere in the world would be interesting or inspiring to visit.
